Update for September 8

'Tis the Season

For our growers, this is one of the busiest months!  They are working hard to harvest the abundance that we enjoy on our tables.  With the mix of the juicy summer treats and the beginnings of the winter supply, everything is ready to come in from the fields at the same time!  While doing the harvesting they are also planting and preping for the next wave of produce during the fall months. All in all, they are so full they don't even have time to let us know what produce they will have available - thus our upload is a little delayed this week!  This is a great time to take advantage of the variety of produce and celebrate the fruits of the farmers labour!  Spread the word to all your friends.

Order Time Extended

With the long weekend, our ordering site will be open until Tuesday at 11:00.  Enjoy the holiday!

Chickens

One of our Farmer's Field Growers Collective farmers has Chickens available.  These chickens have been raised on a non-GMO grain fed diet and have had access to outdoor pastures.  They will be available from September 23.  If you are interested, you are welcome to call Mike and Debbie Loepp at 519-656-3471 for more information.

Traditional Foods

Traditional Foods will continue to offer their wide selection of meat and eggs every other week.  For September, their selection will be available on the following Market days: September 15 and 29.

Update for September 1

Peak Season Abundance

It is September and that means we are reaching the peak of our produce!  Taking a look at the CSA boxes last week, they were overflowing with a combination of the summer goods such as tomatoes, cucumbers and fresh greens and the beginnings of fall items with melons, squash and pumpkins. So tasty!

With such abundance, our Market Table has been full of extra produce.  If you are unable to place an order in advance but are still hoping for produce, drop by the market to see what we have available on our table - you are sure to find some goodies!

Update for August 25

Melons!

One of growers has plenty of muskmelon cantaloupes - so sweet and delicious!  What a taste of summer!

Speaking of summer, tomatoes are here in plenty.  Check out all of the different kinds of cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, juicy beefsteaks.  Add some fresh basil, cilantro or parsley, a little bit of cucumber, some good bread and you have a magnificent sandwich.  Mmmm.

Update for August 18

The Long Lazy Days of Summer

Does it feel like the summer is going by quickly this year?  Perhaps it is because our decadent summer produce seems to be growing at a rather fast rate.  Yes it's true, this growing season everything is about 2 weeks earlier than "normal".  Check out the list today and you will see what we mean - pie pumpkins in August?  Even the growers are surprised! This warmer weather can give us lots of gifts - let's cross our fingers and hope that the fresh plenty will also last longer...and stretch out the long days of summer!

Roma Tomatoes are also starting, but as one of the growers told me, "tomatoes are going to be as scarce as hen's teeth". We are hoping to have more in the next few weeks, but it is not very likely that we will have 1/2 bushel sizes available.  With all the damp and muggy weather it is prime condition for blight in organic fields.  We will keep you posted, but enjoy as many as you can!

Update for August 11

Tastes like Candy!

Yes, that's right candy.  This week is all about the sweetness of our produce!  Have you tried the cherry tomatoes? They are so sweet, juicy and just pop in your mouth...it is easy to eat a whole quart in one sitting!  Mmmm.  We also have Candy Beets, which are known for their sweetness as they keep their intense colour and thus their sweet flavour - roast them or make them into a decadent chocolate cake (check out Simply in Season for a great recipe).  Even the onions want a part of summer sweetness and Candy Onions add a sweet twist to any meal.

I could go on and on - corn, baby squash mixes, carrots, baby cucumbers, new pototoes, ground cherries, tender salad greens, and so much more!  Now is a great time to enjoy the decadence of summer.
